Veneers Q & A

Richmond DentistWhat is a dental veneer?

A dental veneer is a very strong, tooth-colored porcelain or ceramic covering that is adhered to the front surfaces of the teeth. Veneers are often used to correct cosmetic damage like chips, cracks, gaps between teeth, teeth that appear too small, uneven or worn tooth edges, and staining that doesn't respond to teeth whitening. Veneers are custom made using state-of-the-art technology and materials that can be tinted to match your own teeth for a completely natural-looking result.

How are ceramic veneers applied?

Veneers require two office visits to complete. During the first visit, your teeth are evaluated and a small portion of the enamel is carefully removed to make room for the veneer. Removing a small portion of the tooth surface will ensure the veneer lies flush with the surfaces of neighboring teeth once it's applied. An impression is also made and sent to a dental lab where the veneer will be custom crafted. A temporary veneer is often applied to protect the teeth while you're waiting for the permanent veneer to be made. At the second visit, the temporary veneer is removed and the permanent veneer is applied using a very strong bonding agent. A final buffing and polishing will ensure the fit is ideal.

How long does a veneer usually last?

Veneers are designed of very strong materials and are expected to last a decade or even more with proper care including regular dental checkups.

What are the advantages of veneers?

There are many benefits associated with typical veneers. For instance, veneers both look natural and are gentle on the surrounding gum tissue. Veneers are also stain resistant. Applying veneers to your teeth is also an otherwise conservative approach that requires minimal effort and yet still offers great aesthetic benefits without many of the associated drawbacks to more invasive treatments.
