State of the Art Dentistry

State of the Art Dentistry

Dr. Bigelow offers the latest in digital technology innovations to ensure accurate, quick diagnosis and treatment. At his practice, Midtown Richmond Dentistry, he uses digital x-rays, cone beam scan technology, and 3D printing to deliver the best results for his Richmond, Virginia-based patients.

Digital x-rays are the newest technology available to take images of a patient's teeth and jawbone. Instead of using film, this process works by sending the x-rays directly to a computer where they can be viewed on-screen, stored, or printed out, instead of developing the film in a dark room. This technique uses less radiation than a traditional x-ray. There is no wait time as the images are available on screen in a few seconds. The image taken can be enhanced and enlarged to multiple times its actual size on the computer screen. This makes it easier for the dentist to illustrate where and what the issue is. Software installed on the computer can also help dentists to digitally evaluate current images in relation to previous ones. This is known as subtraction radiography. Here, everything which is the same is "subtracted out" from the image, leaving a clear picture of what has changed. This assists the dentists with seeing even the tiniest changes which may not have been noticeable with the naked eye.

Dental cone beam computerized tomography, or CT, is a subset of the CT scan which is employed in situations where traditional facial or dental x-rays would not be adequate. It is not normally utilized routinely because the radiation exposure is higher with this scanner than other types of x-rays. This type of CT scan employs a special type of technology in order to create three-dimensional (3-D) images of soft tissues, nerve paths, dental structures, and bone in the craniofacial region in just a single scan. Images acquired with cone beam CTs assist to create more successful treatment programs.

For many dentists throughout the United States, 3D dentistry is promptly emerging and several are taking advantage of the efficient techniques. Digital or 3D dentistry is used to describe the use of oral scanning, digital 3D printing, and the computer-aided design to make crowns, stone models, bridges, and many other orthodontic tools. This ground-breaking technology makes it possible for dentists to 3D print items in an automated, speedy manner. The devices made are nevertheless made from high-quality ingredients such as titanium and ceramic however instead of having at least a two-week wait time for an item the dentist can install the new restoration in the same visit.
