Teeth Whitening Q & A
Why Do Teeth Turn Yellow?
Discoloration takes place because of several factors. The most frequent cause is eating and drinking items like coffee, berries, and tea which stain teeth. Smoking or using tobacco products can also discolor teeth and make them appear yellow. Whitening treatments used by dentists can typically correct the discoloration. However, sometimes the staining is inside the tooth, caused by an injury to the tooth, and in these situations, internal bleaching or the use of a veneer or crown will be necessary. Taking specific medications for an extended time and undergoing a root canal can also lead to internal discoloration.
How Safe is Teeth Whitening?
Bleaching or whitening teeth which is performed at the dentist’s office will be harmless. These in-office treatments have been proven to be safe in order to ensure that patients receive the best possible results without any negative consequences. Tooth sensitivity can take place after the treatment, however, it should diminish quickly and any sensitivity experienced will be manageable. These treatments are created to make patients feel more confident with their teeth and not harm them.
What is the Teeth Whitening Procedure Like?
First, the dentist evaluates the teeth for any traces of decay or damage which could be present. If found, the spots are cleaned and treated before the whitening begins. To obtain whiter teeth, an innovative, light activated gel which is made from hydrogen peroxide is applied to the teeth. This gel reacts to a special light in order to whiten teeth. To ensure that each tooth is painted with the gel evenly and exposed to the light, in the same way, the patient’s lips are held back with a retainer. The light is then directed at the teeth for roughly 45 minutes. When enough time has gone by, the gel is wiped away and the lip retainer is taken out. Patients should see whiter teeth immediately.
